It’s so hard these days to keep up with the latest wellness trends and goods–has anyone jumped on the celery juice band wagon?? With a copious amount of products flooding the aisles of every beauty counter, it is nearly impossible to try everything out in the average lifetime. Sometimes, the most popular items have too many dollar signs attached to it or are just too good to be true. A lot of the time what we don’t realize is the best thing for us is sitting pretty on the shelf in our pantry. Today, we are breaking down the most common items found in the comfort of our own home that aren’t only delicious, but can also do wonders for your skin and hair! Yep, you read that right! These homemade beauty secrets are hiding in your kitchen:
Avocado
We’ve got 99 problems and we’re pretty sure avocado solves them ALL! Our green friends are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A, D and E which is key in keeping our skin and hair nourished and moisturized.
Our tip: For dry hair & breakage, blend one avocado with two teaspoons of olive oil and massage into your hair from roots to ends. Sit for the 30 minutes, then rinse with cool water.
Turmeric
via @sarahs_day
This powerful spice has been used as a home remedy for centuries and is helpful as much as it is flavorful! Thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits, turmeric can work wonders on condition-riddled skin. It can also help reduce redness from blemishes and calm skin conditions like eczema and rosacea
Our tip: To get that year-round glow, mix 2 tablespoons of flour of your choice, 1 teaspoon turmeric, 3 tablespoons of yogurt and apply a thin layer to your face. Let it dry for up to 20 minutes then rinse with warm water.
Apple Cider Vinegar
via @ecotools
You heard it here first! There is more to apple cider vinegar than just salad dressing. It also works as a perfect detox toner for oily skin by naturally balancing sebum production and removing excess oil from the skin.
Our tip: Apply a bit of apple cider vinegar onto a cotton pad and wipe on your face after cleansing. For combination skin, just apply to the t-zone.
Oranges
We love to eat them, and we love to make up words that rhyme with them. This juicy fruit is so delicious and high in citric acid which helps improve dull skin and hair!
Our tip: Believe it or not, the orange peel is important and even richer in vitamin C than the actual fruit! To diminish dark spots and blemishes, dry the peel out in the sun then grind into a powder. Use this as a body scrub, or add a milk of your choice and apply the mixture to your face.
Olive Oil
via @jmcintyrehair
We are certain that our food would not be nearly as good without this golden elixir, so it is no surprise that it amps up our beauty game too! Olive oil is packed with vitamin A, E and antioxidants which helps to seal in moisture and protect the keratin in our hair. This magic liquid also aids in preventing the production of the hormone DTH which is a cause of hair loss.
Our tip: Bring life back into your hair by coating it with half a cup of warm olive oil after a regular wash. Keep covered, and let it sit for up to 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly, and style to your liking.
