As a parent, the LAST thing you want to hear is that something you’ve given your baby to play with/suck on/wear/etc. is toxic. Thankfully, more and more, we hear of harmful ingredients being exposed and recalls being issued. Today on our baby blog, we’re sharing some of our favorite non-toxic baby and kid products to help you avoid the worst feeling in the world – mom guilt. These items are vetted for being safe for baby, so you can rest easy.
Diapers
We all have moms in our lives that are diaper superheroes and choose to go the cloth route. (Many props to them!) But for moms who can’t go cloth, don’t fret – there ARE safe disposable diaper options. Our favorite brand is Parasol. Parasol’s philosophy is to make diapers soft and as comfortable as possible for babies, since they are in them 24/7! And we can personally attest, these are the softest diapers we’ve found to date. They are also free from everything that shouldn’t be in a diaper – latex, chlorine, fragrances, lotions and inks made with lead or other heavy metals. Plus, they’re cute! Hallelujah!
Teething Aids
Teething is a dreadful time for both mom and baby… and considering it lasts on and off for about 2 years, we were determined to find the safest and most effective teething aids for our kiddos. LexyPexy teethers are handcrafted out of Vermont Maplewood (and in THE cutest shapes and designs ever). Not to worry, the wood is non-splintering and is also never painted! It is also naturally anti-bacterial and non-allergnic, and our babies love slobbering all over these things. Loulou Lollipop is another brand that has a wonderful selection of wood and silicon teethers and necklaces to munch on. Their silicon is food grade and free of BPA, Phthalates, Lead, Cadmium and PVC and their wood products are polished with organic beeswax and olive oil.
Toys
Our go-to site for toys is Milk & Honey Babies. We love that they have toys and products for babies at different ages and stages, including a plethora of wood options! Some of our favorites on their site are the truck push cart, these blocks and this jungle play gym.
We also know how much our kids love plastic toys for their bright colors and fun shapes! So when we go this route we turn to Green Toys. This husband and wife run company recycles milk jugs into super cute toys! Everything is made in the US, colored with food-safe and mineral based dyes and surpasses standards for BPA and Phthalates. How cute is this fire truck and pink dump truck?! They also have some fun toy sets for older kids including this farm, tea party set and a build a bouquet set.
Clothes
We’ll admit, we were late adopters to buying non-toxic and sustainable clothes. But now that we know what we know, there’s no going back! A lot of children’s clothing (especially pajamas) are coated with flame retardants (“PBDE’s”). And while we of course love the idea of protecting our little ones from fires, more and more research is reporting the damage these chemicals can have on our little ones. Since PBDE’s are on basically everything baby (crib mattresses, car seats, etc) we have become mindful of what we dress our babies in.
Enter: Misha and Puff. A lot of their pieces are made with wool, which is naturally flame retardant – yes, you read that right! Safety for your kids, without yucky chemicals. Wool has other great benefits too such as being a natural body temperature regulator. And while you may think wool is synonymous with itchy, they use merino wool which is so, so soft. They also make pieces using 100% Peruvian Pima cotton and use natural and low-impact dyes for their hand-dyed clothes. We absolutely love the care they have in creating pieces that safely and stylishly clothe our kids.
