Tell us a little bit about White Oak Living! How did you get your start in Interior Design?
I’ve had an obsession with homes for as long as I can remember. As a child, my parents built seven houses before I was 12, so naturally going to open houses and drawing house plans with my Dad at the dining room table were a few of my favorite hobbies. Because of my passion for architecture, I decided to take architectural drafting so I could properly get my ideas onto paper. As I started to design home plans, I realized my true passion was following through with my entire vision and taking the projects from start to finish.
How would you describe your aesthetic?
Purposeful, balanced, bright and relaxed.
Ok, tell us about this beautiful home! What was the inspiration?
I wanted this home to feel as though it could have been built many years ago, but also be fresh and modern. I came across 250 year old barn boards that we turned into flooring and decided to use this as the takeoff point for the rest of our modern country home!
Tell us a little bit about the interior design process with new clients, where do you start? What’s the best part?
When I first meet with a new client I find out how they want to live or work in their space. Whether it is a residential or commercial client, the way they want their space to flow and function is the most important aspect of the design process. Once the layout is finalized, the detailed design plan is developed and executed.
My very favorite parts of the design process would have to be developing the initial architectural design, and the site visits. It is so rewarding to be able to get your thoughts onto paper, and then see them come to life!
Do you have a favorite element/room?
The kitchen has to be my favorite room in this house. I went with chickenwire in my cabinetry, and I really love how it lends itself to an old farmhouse.
We love all the fun accessories! Where are your favorite places to source unique decor?
I have collected many of my accessories while traveling or at antique stores throughout Nova Scotia – but I have also been known to frequent Homesense!
What are your favorite home decor trends happening now?
I am loving anything concrete! There are so many beautiful ways to incorporate this material both inside and out!
From floors to ceilings and the light fixtures that hang there, we love everything about this beautiful home! What’s your favorite part? If you love it as much as we do, check out this Rustic Coastal Home too!
