We’re excited to tour the San Diego home of Couture Events‘ owner Krystel Tien on our lifestyle blog today! Inspired by William Morris, saying, “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be BEAUTIFUL,” Krystel’s home is clean & uncluttered, yet is still filled with stylish elements. From light aqua paint to terrariums and contemporary art, every piece is intentional. She mixes traditional chandeliers and soft fabrics & colors with modern furniture and art for a light, uplifting, and inviting space.
Here’s a little bit about Krystel’s home with her husband and pup, straight from the event designer herself – Oh! And you should probably check out her fabulous work to!
Our home is in Little Italy San Diego. This is our third home. In the past, I decorated with only white and accents of gold. This time I wanted our home to not only be beautiful but also comfortable. I wanted friends not to have to worry when sitting on our white couch or spilling their coffee on our floor, but I still wanted a clean and lovely look. I chose grey, refreshing soft teal, and chartreuse with accents of black & white. I love plants and the idea of having life in our home but I do not have a green thumb. So I have two things to brighten up and bring life to our home- 1. I bring home flowers weekly from the local farmers market that takes place on our street. 2. We have succulents and air plants throughout the house (they are easy to keep alive and they make me happy).
Breakfast is our favorite meal- croissants and coffee are usually how our weekend start when we don’t have a wedding or event.
I created our fireplace mosaic with pieces of quartz from Michaels Craft Store and by watching a TLC video online. Piece by piece, I placed each quartz, like a puzzle. It took about a month of working on it in my free time, which was not a part of the plan but ended up being worth it.
We love and admire art & photography – we keep photos of our adventures around the world on the walls of our home. Many photos we have taken ourselves on our trips and a few pictures from one of our favorite photographers, Bryan Miller. Trips to London, Paris, Rome, Santorini… these are a few of our favorite places. We love to travel and believe that “Adventure is out there”.
As for the art- We have curated a collection from our favorite artists (many of which are local San Diego). I had one of my favorite artists, Suzy Lee, paint calligraphy on our walls with two of our favorite quotes (one in our living room and one on the back of our front door) and she painted our vows on canvas for our bedroom. We also had Whitney Straupe paint a gorgeous frame around our mirror. We also have prints from lovely artist Kelli Murray, in our guest room. We call California home but my husband is from Michigan so we have beautiful prints of both states from Paper Parasol Press. Last but not least we had portraits made from Rifle Paper Co. of us on our wedding day and one of our pup, B. Tien.
In our guest room we have a globe and ask all guests that stay with us to mark where they are from and put their initials next to it, we have friends and family from around the world and it’s always fun to look at globe and see who has come to visit and stayed in our guest room. It’s our version of a guest book.
I found the distressed doors at an antique shop in Ocean Beach, CA and I knew I had to find a place for them in our home. Turns out that the vintage doors made the perfect headboard in our guest room.
Simple, yet cozy! Love the calligraphy
