Eclectic, Coastal, or Modern. Whether you are true to one interior design style or it changes with your mood, Kim Rodosky of 503Found, an interior design and furnishings boutique in Newport Beach, offers up three ways to decorate your dining room on our lifestyle blog today. She uses a few varied pieces and some of the same to create 3 distinct, equally beautiful, spaces!
What are the themes of the three different rooms?
The first room is very eclectic. We played with a ton of different patterns using pillows, rugs, and fun textures with the shag throw and rattan chairs.
The second look is coastal traditional – very clean with blues, sea grass, rattan chairs, fresh cut watermelon. It’s coastal without being too beach-y.
The final look is very contemporary – blacks and golds with touches of acrylic, wood, and the fabulous black shag carpet. We took away a lot of the accessories and kept it simple, modern, and chic.
What pieces did you use consistently for all three looks?
Throughout all three looks we used the large blue/gray rug as the base for layering different rugs to create the different themes.
The main glass table with the gold base is used throughout all three looks and is styled differently in each theme. Whether it’s using a different chair, positioning it differently in the room, or placing varied accessories on the table – the table took on a new look throughout all three rooms!
We hung the incredible light fixture/chandelier, which was consistent throughout the shoot. It’s a great neutral color that can take on different looks, yet also makes a statement. We used the white table lamp. Again, using it in different areas throughout the room made unique visual statements. It’s a core piece that can take on different looks.
The large art piece on the right hand side – with the blue waves – also paired well with each look. We accessorized the gold bookshelf differently throughout the shoot – it’s such a great staple to have in any room!
The gold champagne bucket – a must no matter what theme!
How were you able to create three distinct styles by just changing up the accessories and small pieces?
We were able to create three distinct looks by the placement of the furniture. When you use it in an unexpected way, you will get a more unique and eclectic look, while in the coastal traditional we used it in a classic way. Also, layering the rugs and the rug colors made a big impact. Other easy ways to change the look included using different chairs.
The biggest change would be mixing and matching pieces to be eclectic or staying really clean and simple – the pieces take on different looks when you do that. Keep lines clean for modern, add in rattan and indigo for traditional, and mix and match patterns and textures for eclectic.
The outdoor table and chair vignette stayed the same, but accessorized differently with florals, lemons, etc.
How do you see your client using this room?
We designed it as an informal dining and entertaining room. Also we could see her doing work in this space, looking out into the courtyard and being in the center of the household!
What advice would you give to readers who want to change up their design style?
Our advice is to keep core pieces that can go in any direction. By having a great piece of lighting, table, large base rug and bookshelf – you can go in any direction by mixing in accessories. Editing or adding accessories can really change your look. We learned from this process that editing (taking away from the room) is sometimes more impactful than adding – especially for our contemporary room!
