Do you have anxiety about becoming that old lady who wears shamrock beads and dresses in head to toe green on St. Patty’s Day? Maybe that’s just us. But we know that you all want to still look cute while still being festive on holidays! That’s why we decided to bring in Julia from Lemon Stripes to give us some advice on how to stay chic while still feeling festive with your St. Patrick’s Day fashion! Maybe it’s time to put away that “Kiss Me I’m Irish” t-shirt and read this interview…
How would you describe your style?
Preppy, colorful, classic. I love patterns, especially stripes (duh) and hot pinks. I don’t really take fashion risks very often.
When and why did you start your blog?
I started the blog in the long hot summer of 2010 as a creative space to share my recipes and outfit ideas with family and friends. I didn’t even realize that fashion and lifestyle blogging was a “thing” and I certainly didn’t actually think that anyone would read it. The first year was mostly just my mom and sister reading it and telling me that my terrible photos looked great. That was fun and I will forever thank them for their white lies that kept me going.
If someone is trying to be a little more festive for St. Patricks Day, what’s a chic way to incorporate green into an outfit?
You don’t need to wear head to toe green just because those day-drunk people do it! Wear a pair of green flats or a green oxford under your sweater for a subtle show of pride and to avoid that dreaded pinch.
Which shades of green work well with specific skin tones?
I am Italian so have olive undertones. Lime and bright greens make me look slightly seasick so dark pines and mint greens are a better match for me. I can’t speak to other skin shades but in general if you have extremely light skin, pastels wash you out!
What’s your number one “no-no” for dressing for holidays like St. Patrick’s Day?
Stay away from those silly graphic tees sporting phrases like “Blonde, dumb, and Irish” or “I (CLOVER) beer”. If you’re not in college, these are never acceptable.
We love your classic and elegant style that you post about on Lemon Stripes. What’s your favorite way to dress festive without being too “loud” and losing that chic edge?
A subtle pop of festivity is my preference. Last year I wore a green headband with an all black outfit and gold jewelry. Classy, chic, but festive, no?
And of course, just because we’re nosy, we had to ask Julia some of our favorite questions for our style blogger friends…
What’s one fashion trend you wish would come back:
Hair crimping. JK that was the worst!
Do you have a beauty secret?
Homemade green tea spray. My esthetician taught me this trick for long flights or nights without much sleep. Brew a batch of green tea and let it cool. Once it’s cool, put it into a mini spray bottle and spray your face for a refresher throughout the day. It works wonders! You can also make green tea ice cubes to rub under your eyes if you’re really in need of a pick me up.
Who is your celebrity style crush?
Blake Lively. I love her simple elegant red-carpet style (Did you know that she doesn’t even use a stylist?) as well as her casual day-to-day looks. Every outfit she puts together looks extremely well thought-out. She has a serious swagger and confidence that elevates her style even further.
Do you have a secret talent?
If I told you then it wouldn’t be a secret anymore! But my not-so-secret talent is making vegan pesto and vegan Caesar dressing. Seriously I should package and sell them. And no, I’m not vegan.
I can’t live without:
Burt’s Bees chap stick and green juice. I’m an addict on both counts…. This is anonymous right?
