Home Tour: Pastel and Feminine Texas Home by Jana Bek

Jana Bek is responsible for creating some of our very favorite interiors so we are super excited to have a home tour of her work today! This home she designed in Wichita Falls, Texas is full of feminine pastels with just the right amount of masuline pieces to create a chic and balanced decor for this family.

She wanted to create bright & airy spaces for this young family with pops of coral & turquoise through out. In the entry, Meghan, the owner, already had chosen the beautiful floral wallpaper (from Anthropologie) so Jana wanted to add accents that highlighted the wallpaper, rather than compete. In the foyer, Meghan often uses the space to photograph clients,  so the pieces needed to be easily mobile and they wanted it to be elegant but approachable. The fiddle leaf fig trees were the perfect accent – they add so much flair with a little footprint. With young families she often uses indoor/outdoor rugs in high traffic areas which they did in her foyer. In the living room, Meghan had the key furniture foundation pieces (couch, side chairs, & ottoman) she just needed help bringing everything together & rounding out the space. The pillows & artwork keep in line with the coral & turquoise palette while subtle hints of gold bring in a little glam factor.

We caught up with Jana to learn a little more about her business and hear what inspires her work!

Name: Jana Bek

Company: Jana Bek Design

City: I split my time between Ann Arbor, Michigan & New York, NY

How would you describe your design style?

My design style is bright and airy; I prefer using neutral foundation pieces then layering on bold pops of color in décor & punches of pattern for interest. I love designing that way because it gives clients the ability to mix things up down the line.

When and why did you start your company?

I’ve always wanted to own my own business & the sum of many awesome experiences gave me the skill set to start my own business. Early in my career I began in fashion merchandising & product development for Macy’s Merchandising Group & Henri Bendel’s in NY. They were amazing experiences but I had always loved home décor.  Creating beautiful spaces has more permanence then the more temporary trends of fashion so I transitioned to home décor. After getting a second degree at Parson’s School of Design in NY, I helped Caitlin Wilson of Caitlin Wilson Textiles launch her fabric line. Caitlin was a joy to work with & a very inspiring business woman. With her line off and running, she needed more administrative help so I went on to work as a buyer at One King’s Lane while I built up my interior design business in every second I had to spare. Literally after work and on the weekends I was always building my business but I loved it so it was worth it. I absolutely love what I do, I still work on nights & weekend but because it’s mine, I’m excited, and my clients are excited so it’s never really work.

Where do you find inspiration for your projects as well as everyday life?

Every time I get a new client I’m inspired. I have them create Pinterest boards for me to get to know their aesthetic & I’m consistently delighted with what they pin. Also when clients need me to merge styles it makes me think in new ways. I just completed a gentleman’s home office where he wanted me to balance rustic & modern styles. It inspired me to think about materials differently. Many of my clients are young stylish families which also forces me to get creative – I have to find new ways to create beautiful designs that are also kid friendly. I’m an Instagram addict too so beautiful feeds get me inspired too!

What are your favorite home trends happening right now?

I think more than ever now people are mixing high and low which I love.  Like people posting their Home Goods finds on Instagram! Also more and more of my clients don’t mind getting their hands dirty and doing DIYs. I always try to work with what I (or a client has) so I enjoy seeing that attitude shift.

If I wasn’t an interior designer I would be a: A trophy wife

Home Styling secret: If you are going to style anything, cocktails help. (This isn’t meant to be funny!)  Really, styling is easy if you practice patience, just play, and not take it seriously.

Design style crush: Mary McDonald

Secret talent: Attacking things. I may get overwhelmed when I’m faced with a new challenge but I privately panic for a second then dive in.

I can’t live without: Face care products – I’m a junky!
