Have you heard of the company Freshly Picked? They have the cutest mocassin style shoes for kids that we can’t help but die a little over every time we see them on those chubby baby feet! Susan Petersen is the Owner and CEO of Freshly Picked but is also a mom! Since we know that in this day and age, many women choose to continue working even after kids, and we wanted to celebrate that! Susan is our first Working Mom feature and we are always so inspired to see what she’s up to over at Freshly Picked. Since 2009 they have been making quality, durable kids’ mocassins that even the celebs (or at least their littles) love! Read on to find out how Susan balances being a mom to two while running a major company…

What does a typical day in your position look like?
We are up early getting breakfast on the table, making sure that homework has been done, hair is combed and everyone is ready for school. My husband takes the kids to school and I go to the office to work. I work a ‘typical’ work day, and by typical, I mean that I try to keep it under 12 hours. Then I head home for dinner, stories and bed.
How do you balance being a working mom?
The secret to balance is realizing that, balance is bull—- (can I say that here?). There is literally no such thing as balance for a working mom. If you strive for balance you will fall short. What works for me is that I focus on my priorities and choices. I try to say ‘no’ more than I say ‘yes’. I don’t work weekends or nights anymore and I put my phone away when we’re at dinner or with the kids.
Has there ever been a breaking point when you didn’t think you could do both? What got you through?
A couple of times this year actually! I sat down with my husband and we worked out a schedule that works best for everyone. He only works 2 days a week for now. This won’t work for everyone, but it works for our situation.

I love that you are featuring working moms! I am a stay at home mom and our daily schedule is constantly changing as Bronson gets older. And these shoes??!! Adorable. My son has very chubby feet and we haven’t been able to find a shoe that he can wear. I think these will be the ones and perfect for winter! I am ordering Chocolate as soon as I finish typing this!
Wow, what an amazing story! It is inspiring to see this! Thank you for sharing!
I love Susan! She is a huge inspiration to me, go her! I love that she and her husband have found a balance that works for them, and that he is able (willing) to be the man at home for her. Loved this interview!
