Ever see those homes or rooms with colorful interior design that capture you and you wish you could emulate? Abbe Fenimore, Founder & Interior Designer of Studio Ten 25 is showing us how to decorate with color and how colorful home decor can be incorporated into your home in a way that fits your personal style. Abbe says, “Although neutral color palettes and the understated, ‘less is more’ style are popular right now, color trends are always changing. They come and go every 2-3 years, so we love creating spaces with neutral basics where colorful accents can become the focus and easily be updated.”
Paint an Accent Piece
One of my favorite ways to infuse a bit of color into a space is to paint a piece of accent furniture or an existing built-in. It’s an easy way to brighten up and reuse a piece that you already have, and a fresh coat of paint that coordinates with your color palette is sure to make the space feel special.
Pick a Focal Color
Keep it simple by narrowing it down to your favorite color and then building the entire palette around it. Pink (in every version of the pretty hue) is my favorite color because it can be sophisticated in blush or playful in fuchsia. It mixes well with turquoise, blue, lavender, and even navy, making it easy to use in any project. A little goes a long way, so try incorporating it with multicolor fabrics to give it depth while mixing in art and accessories for a finished look.
Layer Color
Layering color works best when your main pieces, like sofas, accent chairs, and tables, are neutral staples that will stand the test of time. Mixing in textures with rugs, pillows, and even upholstery fabrics will give the space a cozy feel and allow you to layer in colorful pieces. Try layering a rug with multiple colors and a large scale pattern with art to compliment the accent colors in the room. You want your eye to move around the space with ease and not jump to one bold item.
