This precious party was themed after the popular children’s book Blueberries for Sal. Instead, the cute bear birthday party was “Blueberries for Francis” celebrating Francis turning four! We love how mom, Natasha Lawler, came up with a creative theme and styled it to match. And how fun is the bear face cake?! She thought of everything! Below, Natasha shares her favorite parts of the party. We know you’ll love all the fun twists on the book that served as treats, activities, and decor!
Months ago my son was saying that he wanted a “bear birthday.” At about that time we rented the super sweet book Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey from the library. We both loved it! I remembered the story— of a little girl and her mama getting mixed up with a mama bear and her cub while picking blueberries — fondly from my own childhood. Of course, we had to buy a copy and it has been a top-shelf read ever since. It also added the subtlety that I was looking for to the birthday party theme. Plus, I got to let all my friends know about an amazing book! All the party inspiration was from the book, although I asked my friend Hailey to make ’Sal’ a bit more masculine. Thus, ‘Blueberries for Francis’ was born!
I was thrilled that there were a couple Rockwellian moments at the party. I will never forget 51 kids jumping in and out of the 5 baby “plunge pools” and zipping down the 75 feet long slip n slide. (Pro tip: use dish soap to get some serious mph going). I also loved the sweet kids huddled around the piñata with their silver pails. How cute!
Francis and I had a lot of fun making the bear cake together. Although it did take maybe three times as long… as most group projects with four-year-olds do ;). The cake’s nose and ears are cupcakes and his eyebrows are doughnuts. It also took a whole morning to make all the bear grilled cheese sandwiches. But I must say, mayo on the outsides of the bread does make the best grilled cheese.
My dear aunt has been giving me Margarete Steiff bears since my baby shower for Francis so it was fun to have those on display for decor, alongside other favorite McCloskey and bear-themed books. A few girls gave the bears a good cuddle during the party and other parents read the books aloud to their littles. So it was quite useful decor!
