Going on holiday? Alpaca my bags. That started to inspire this creative mama, Joni, to throw an Aplaca filled, summer themed birthday party for her little girl. But her baby’s name, Summer, as well as their love of travel highly influenced the theme as well. To tie it all together Joni, who’s an event planner and florist with her company Chasing Arrows in Brisbane, Australia, settled on the overarching theme “Onederlust” and it couldn’t be cuter!
Joni says, Our little girl’s name is Summer so I loved the idea of having a Summer themed birthday party. I came up with the theme of ‘Onederlust’ and incorporated many elements you would see while on a Summer holiday. I wanted the guests to feel like they were on a vacation rather than just in my house! The alpacas came about because I saw the sign saying “going on a holiday, alpaca my bags”, and it snowballed from there!
The use of rainbows in the event is a personal touch. We lost my dad almost 4 years ago and rainbows became very special to the family as they kept appearing at momentous moments in life and we always knew it was him celebrating with us, so it was my way of having dad at the party with us because he never got to meet my daughter.
I loved the idea of using dried flowers, especially for the low kids table because they don’t need water so it’s great for those adventurous little hands that might knock them over. I chose rich sunset colors for the theme and steered away from greenery just for a change. I also added lots of metallics like copper, gold and rose gold.
I love to get my hands dirty and get creative so I made a lot myself. I hand painted most things including the suitcases, signs, backdrops, the pattern on the kids tables, and so much more! I made the ice cream sundae stand out of wood and a small table and all the signage for it. I also made the giant number 1 using cardboard and wrapping it in material.
I baked the majority of the desserts myself including the cake (cake topper is from Creating Monkies), cookies, cupcakes and Nutella mousse. My hubby made the bliss balls and my mum and cousin made the delicious savory platter. The little tarts were from Le Caprice bakery in Bulimba. I hand stamped little calico bags, attached handmade tassels and filled them with goodies for the kids to take home as a thank you for coming. I hope one day when my little girl looks back at her travel themed first birthday party it gives her a strong desire to go out into the world and experience all the beauty is has to offer.
