If you didn’t think a color could be a party theme – think again! This mama, Emily of Feast & Festivities, shows us how to go all out, using your kid’s favorite shade, with her son’s all red third birthday party. Red games, red balloons, even red food! If you decide to go this route, one thing to make sure of is that guests participate! Everyone was told to wear red, or else… (read on for what consequence was in store).
Emily says, Get red-dy for a whole lotta red! I asked my son what theme he wanted his third birthday to be, and without any prompting he replied, “red!” Parents, if you’re ever stumped on a theme for your kid, pick a color and run with it. This was the easiest party decor I’ve ever had to pull together, and surprisingly fun.
Guests received hand stamped invitations in the mail, designed and printed by That First Spark. The invite hinted at what was to come: “And Enzo said, “you must wear red!” For anyone that didn’t don his favorite color, we were prepared to equip them with a clown nose.
Everyone in the neighborhood knew someone was turning three. We spray painted the sidewalk red confetti shapes and number threes. Enzo loves pinwheels, so we added those too. It was a cool site to see when the wind blew!
One of my favorite details ended up being a complete fluke. When we went to set up the balloons the night before, I realized I had mistakenly ordered a giant number 2 balloon. (I blame this on ordering them at 3am while nursing a newborn.) We added a “+1” with red washi tape and it ended up so cute! In fact, the first thing Enzo said in the morning when he saw his birthday party unfolding was, “I like the red two, mom!”
All the food was red, too. The red deviled eggs turned out amazing, and the homemade sugar cookies were a hit. Thankfully, red is a common vegetable and fruit color, so those platters were easy. And everyone loved the bruschetta pasta salad. For the cake, red velvet was the obvious choice from one of our favorite bakeries, Baked Expectations. I love the look of the custom design they did for us with the little red maraschino cherries on top!
The kids kept busy with red beach balls in the yard, balloons, solo stacking cups and TATTLY rainbow tattoos. Some parents even got in on the fun! A big thank you to Kassandra Donaldson for capturing yet another milestone for my family.
