For many, welcoming your man home from work is a part of a typical night’s routine. But, for the committed partners of our country’s dedicated soldiers welcoming your man home from overseas is an amazing and highly anticipated moment. These photographs, by Captures for Keeps, captured that magical moment between a decorated soldier, Dave and his loving wife, Kristi. We adore the welcome home sign she made for his return! The way he embraces her in every pose exemplifies the saying “distance makes the heart grow fonder.”
Kristi wrote these words on her personal blog about their reunion experience:
After 11 long months of separation, my husband came home to me last week. There are really no accurate words to describe what it felt like to make eye contact with my husband across the gymnasium, through a sea of people, and to know in that moment that we had survived. Because up until that very moment, it still didn’t feel real. Even though I had been preparing to have him home for several weeks, it still seemed distant and disconnected. I knew it was really going to happen in my mind, but my heart couldn’t accept it. I had been waiting for, praying for, longing for, and dreaming about this moment for so long that it was hard to believe it was finally going to happen. Even when we were in the gym with all of the families and the soldiers walked in to stand in formation; even as the speeches were made from the podium; even when the captain dismissed the soldiers and loud cheers rose from the bleachers, sighs of relief and cheers at the end of heartache; even then, my anticipation rose and held tightly. But as soon as my husband turned his face to the bleachers and locked eyes with me, my heart stopped beating. Because then I knew that it was all over. That in a few seconds, he’d be in my arms and I wouldn’t have to say goodbye or send him away again. He was home. He was mine. Reunion.
Especially during this 4th of July week, we would like to take a moment to thank every single person who has served our country in some way or another and all of their loved ones they leave behind to do so.
